Squish Squish!!!!
I am of course referring to the drama which arose from Kim Kardashian’s nude being posted by herself via Twitter and Instagram a few days ago and the variety of responses the post received. Kim K and the Kardashian’s being some of the least liked celebrities, evoked mostly negative reaction from the public. One of the more focused on comments was the direct tweet in response to the post made by teen star Chloe Grace Moretz in which she criticised Kim K for setting the ‘wrong’ goals for young girls while using the social platform she has been given.
She was immediately supported by those also outraged by Kim’s nude body and for a split second became the feminist icon we so desperately long for. However, the message that we as women have “so much more to offer than just our bodies” as argued by Moretz is actually quite offensive and in a way conforms to slut-shaming which in the 21st century there is just no room for. Condemning another females empowerment or modesty goes against the feminist notion of women in support of one another and creates these invisible boundaries of how much nudity is ‘socially acceptable’ in ordered to label you as a ‘slut’ or a ‘prude’.
This leads me onto my next point of why exactly does the naked female body still cause such an outrage? Nudity is a part of our everyday life and always has been so why does its appearance on a social media sites evoke such a big reaction? Body confidence is no stranger to us all. Every now and again even the least confident of us have a good body day where we feel like parading around the house naked because we just feel so darn good. So why not share it with everyone else? Being proud of the way you look is nothing to hide in fact it should be celebrated because that’s what empowerment is all about. If your naked body is a sign of liberation then spread that message on. If Kim’s nude is trying to teach young girls anything its to not conform to these socially constructed boundaries and let your body and your confidence be celebrated. Be empowered by the way you look. Be empowered by your sexuality and the choices you make.Feel liberated in your own skin and embrace your flaws. I know if I looked like Kim K I sure as hell would.
Kim later on went onto responding to the backlash she received and commented on the fact that up to this day no matter what she does it turns back around onto the subject of the sex tape that put her in the spotlight, She then made an important point of reminding everyone that she is so much more than the sex tape from 13 years ago. She’s a mother, a wife, an entrepreneur and most importantly a woman who’s proud of her body and is not afraid to embrace it.
